YOU SAY (HELL TO PAY)
Autumn 1997, Raleigh NC

You say you're a fisherman; this knowledge is yours
From tackle to rods and reels, different lines and exotic lures
You act like a fisherman, but I have my doubts
Your boat looks so empty, my friend; could it be that they've all jumped out?

You call yourself a fisherman; yeah, that's what you say
You boast and you brag about ev'ry big one that got away
You talk like a fisherman; well, this much is true
You sure got the lingo down, but - how much fishing do you really do?

Talk is cheap unless you're walkin' what you're talkin'
You can't keep on livin' this way
Go on, preach! I know this act is not your practice
For what you teach, there's hell to pay...

You dress like a fisherman and most think you are
You wear the right hat, my friend, but hasn't this thing gone too far?
You say you're a fisherman; well, I'm skeptical
This doctrine you throw around: Sounds good but is it practical?

Life is cheap if what you're givin' you ain't livin'
You can't keep on talkin' that way
Go ahead and pray! You know, your lip service makes me nervous
For what you say, there's hell to pay...
