I had quite unexpectedly bumped into an old friend
from Bryn Mawr, who was married and living in Raleigh.
We went out for a few beers and talked about old times.
Afterward, I sat in my car for an hour, reflecting deeply.

IF WISHES WERE HORSES
Summer 1995, Raleigh NC

Thinkin' back on some of the dreams I've had
I guess I'm lucky some haven't come true
Though almost all of them have changed
I guess there's still just that special few
And late at night, way past the time for sleep
I wonder how I'll ever keep them alive...

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride
If dreamin' costs you nothin', count up all the tears you've cried
So many souls, keepin' so much inside
If wishes were horses, beggars like me would ride...

Thinkin' back to some of the friends I've had
I guess I should be where some are today
I never thought that I could change
And I'd be dead now if not for the Way
And late at night, way past the time for sleep
I wonder why He ever keeps me alive...

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride
If dreamin' costs you nothin', count up all the tears you've cried
So many souls, keepin' so much inside
If wishes were horses, beggars like me would ride...
